Triple Layer Technology: three layers, one method.

Since 1986 we have made our kibble with Triple Layer Technology (T.L.T.), which we were the first to introduce in Italy. A three-stage process that builds the kibble layer by layer, combining palatability, nutritional value and lasting freshness.

Cross-section of an ImperialFood kibble: the three layers of Triple Layer Technology - palatability, nourishment, vitality

A kibble built in layers, not just cooked.

A conventional kibble comes from a single stage: mixing, cooking and drying. The heat that gives it shape and crunch, however, can degrade the most sensitive nutrients. Triple Layer Technology separates the two moments: first the cooking, then cold enrichment, and finally the outer coating.

The result is a kibble made of three layers, each with a precise function: an extrusion-cooked core that provides structure and energy, an intermediate layer that carries vitamins, lipids and proteins intact, and an outer coating that makes the kibble more palatable and protects its freshness.

It is a standard we were the first to introduce in Italy, in 1986, through our collaboration with Jean Cathary, a French veterinarian and one of Europe's leading experts in canine nutrition. We have applied it to all our kibble ever since, at our plant in Sissa Trecasali.

The production process, stage by stage.

Three stages in sequence, each essential to the next. This is how an ImperialFood kibble takes shape in our plant.

  1. 01Heat and shape

    Extrusion and cooking

The raw materials are mixed, cooked and extruded. This is the stage that gives the kibble its shape, texture and crunch, and makes the starches digestible. This creates the core: the structural and energy base of every kibble.

  2. 02Cold and nutrients

    Cold enrichment

Once cooking is complete, the kibble is enriched cold with vitamin, lipid and protein components. Working at low temperature preserves the integrity of heat-sensitive nutrients, so the finished product retains a high nutritional value.

  3. 03Surface and taste

    Outer coating

The final stage wraps the kibble in a kind of outer glaze. It is the layer the dog perceives first: it improves palatability and encourages regular eating, while also helping to keep the kibble fresh and of high quality over time.

What changes in the bowl.

Three concrete benefits, one for each layer. Breeders, retailers who sell kibble every day and owners with a single dog at home all recognise them.

Outer layer

Better palatability

The outer coating makes the kibble more appealing to the dog and encourages regular, satisfying eating, day after day. A benefit that anyone managing several dogs recognises from the very first bowl.

Intermediate layer

Optimised nutritional value

Cold enrichment ensures that vitamins, lipids and proteins reach the finished kibble intact: a complete, balanced diet that supports the dog's overall health and well-being.

Outer layer

Lasting freshness

The outer layer helps preserve the freshness and quality of the kibble over time, from production to the bowl: an added value for those who buy large formats or manage stock.

All our kibble is made this way.

Triple Layer Technology is not reserved for one range: it is the method we use to make all fourteen kibbles in our catalogue, from DeLuxe to Harmony. The formulations change, according to the need they address; the way we build them does not.
